With the nest x yale lock you have two options for replacing the batteries. You can use non rechargeable batteries or rechargeable batteries. I used the original non rechargeable batteries in my lock until the failed after about 6 months. After the original non rechargeable batteries in my lock died, I changed over to AA rechargeable batteries that I use for the majority of my household electronics. The rechargeable batteries don’t last quite as long as the the non rechargeable batteries but for me it’s worth the trade off because it’s more environmentally friendly, cost effective and less of hassle than always buying batteries.

I have a fast battery charger it takes me 15 minutes to charge the batteries for the nest x yale lock, and then they are good to go. I’ve found that the rechargeable batteries have lasted about 3 months before the low battery warning has come on, I then let the low battery warning stay on for about 2 weeks before I changed them without an issue just to see how long I could go before the batteries were depleted. The lock still worked and did not completely die on me, but I figured I would change them since we were going on vacation.

With this next charge of batteries I’m going to see if how long it is until the batteries completely die and the lock no longer functions. I have a feeling that even though the rechargeable batteries are reading “low battery” in the nest app this might be just a fluke that happens when you choose to use rechargeable batteries.

Recommended Batteries for Nest x Yale Locks

As I said earlier the charger I had charges the batteries in 15 minutes, but I haven’t been able to find a 15 minute battery charger since I bought mine. Since then the next best quick battery charger I have found is the Energizer Recharge 1 - Hour Charge Charger. You can still lock the door while you are charging the batteries so take the batteries out, lock the door and replace in an hour or the next morning when you go to work.

The Nest Detect Nest Security System Batteries are CR 123A batteries. The security sensor batteries are lithium and you can use either rechargeable or non - rechargeable batteries for replacement.

The Nest Detect Nest Security sensor batteries are reported by nest to last 2 years before needing replacement. While we’ve installed the nest security system and tested it for months we haven’t yet gotten a low battery signal from any of the sensors so for the time being the 2 year battery life from nest is the best information we have. The nest detect security sensor ships with CR123A Panasonic Lithium Batteries as shown in the photo above. The CR123A Panasonic Lithium Batteries the nest detect ships with are are not rechargeable. The Nest website does not recommend using rechargeable batteries but we like to test things out to see what happens just like we did with the nest x yale lock because rechargeable batteries offer a more environmentally friendly solution and are often a better investment in the long run that disposable batteries.

We tested the rechargeable this 12 pack of Rechargeable CR123A batteries in the nest detect sensors and there seem to be no ill effects. It should be noted that that the rechargeable batteries have a max capacity of 700mAH vs 1500mAH hours for the non-rechargeable batteries meaning that they will most likely last half as long before needing recharging, which would mean you need to recharge your security system batteries about once per year. I think that’s worth the tradeoff of not needing to keep purchase non-rechargeable batteries. There is also an 8 - Pack Rechargeable CR123A battery option if you fewer security sensors.

I have the nest temperature sensors installed in my home and love using them with my nest 3rd generation thermostat to keep my home more comfortable. They are a great addition to the nest thermostat that can have helped me sleep better by better regulating the temperature in my master bedroom and have helped us save even more energy by only heating and cooling the parts of our house were using.

The nest thermostat temperature sensor comes with a non rechargeable Duracell Lithium CR2 battery that is reported to last 2+ years. To access and replace the nest temperature sensor battery you just need a coin to loosen the screw on the back side of the sensor. You unscrew the back of the temperature sensor and you can pull out the old nest temperature sensor battery and replace it. We tested the nest temperature sensor and it works with both rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries but they must be lithium ion batteries.

For the nest protect smoke detector you must use the exact same AA Energizer Ultimate Lithium Batteries that the nest protect ships with. The nest protect is specifically engineered to only work with the AA Energizer Ultimate Lithium Batteries and can malfunction if other batteries are used. There have been reports of failures of the smoke detector when alternate batteries are used.

With something that is meant to save your life it’s important to use the right batteries. Lithium batteries hold a charge much longer than traditional batteries and can be stored for more than a decade and still hold a charge, the same is not true for traditional alkaline batteries. Nest Battery Replacement: Nest Thermostat

IMPORTANT READ THIS FIRST: The nest thermostat battery typically doesn’t need replaced and this is not something that happens very often. You should always call nest first to troubleshoot your issue before attempting any type of battery repair on your Nest Thermostat. Typically a low battery or drained nest battery is caused by other issues with your furnace and not by the nest thermostat battery. If you attempt your own repair you will lose the warranty on your nest product, our recommendation is call nest first, do the troubleshooting to accurately diagnose the issue and if it is found to be the battery then replace it if nest does not offer you another solution.
